Left out of the shop and right into Moon St, left at the end and out of town along Tamarind Drive, under the motorway and warm the legs up with the first climb of the day. Over that down the other side and back up to cross over the motorway and then take the first exit off the roundabout onto Hinterland Way (formerly the Pacific Highway). Follow this great route past the Macadamia Castle, Newrybar and Bangalow finishing at the lookout over Byron Bay at St Helena for a photo opportunity. .

Turn here into Coolamon Scenic Drive and follow that along the ridge and it turns into Coorabell Rd and drops down to e creek crossing and then climbs back up to Federal. At the T intersection at the top, turn right and about 200m along you'll find Federal, turn right into Federal where there is a couple of cafes and a General Store that is open 7 days (Mon-Sat from 7AM, Sunday 9AM-ish). Fill up with drinks here - no mains water.

Back out of Federal and turn right onto Federal Dr towards Eureka, becomes Eureka Rd and follow that to the end at the Bangalow-Lismore Rd. Turn right here and flow that to Clunes (there is a General Store and Cafe here also open 7 days). Pass through Clunes and turn right into Johnston Rd part way up the first hill out of town. Down Johnston Rd to the end at Eltham (nice pub here), then left into Eltham Rd and follow that back to Ballina. At the end of Eltham Rd turn left then right into Teven Rd and it will put you out where the Bruxner Highway passes under the motorway at West Ballina. 

Alternate route avoids the rough end of Booyong Rd at Clunes. After Eureka, turn left at the old wooden church, Springvale Rd. Follow to the T intersection at the Lismore-Bangalow Rd and turn left. Down the hill and then right into Booyong Rd. Follow this to Tooheys Mill Rd, becomes Nashua Rd to Fernleigh Rd T intersection. Turn right down Fernleigh Rd to the end and left at the T Intersection, up the hill till you meet Tamarind Drive (Hinterland Way) and turn right and follow that back into Ballina. 

Alternately, at Clunes continue along Bangalow Rd to Johnston Rd and turn right downhill to Eltham, over the old railway line and left onto Eltham Rd and follow back to Ballina or right for quick beer at the Eltham Pub!
