Starting at The Bicycle Emporium head west out of town along River St, cross the canal bridge on the bike path and slip into Johnson Drive/Kalinga St down to Burn Point Ferry Road, the pop back out onto the main road. Pass under the Pacific Highway and take the Bruxner Highway exit towards Alstonville and then the first right into Teven Rd. Follow Teven Rd across Emigrant Creek then take the first right onto North Teven Rd to warn the legs up. Roll over the hill, down past the quarry and out to Tintenbar Rd, then turn left, cross one bridge and turn right onto Houghlahans Creek Rd.
The road climbs gently at first along the side of the valley and in several places you can see cuttings from the old Ballina to Booyong railway, which was open from 1930-1949. The climb was unsealed until recently, which took away some if it's charm. The climb winds up through the rainforest and is very picturesque and just a little grippy towards the end.
The climb ends at the disabled riding school and the bitumen starts again, continue along the road till it meets Kirklands Lane. After another couple of kilometres this merges with Nashua Rd, which will take you down to Fernleigh Rd at Fernleigh. Turn right here and follow back to Tintenbar where there is a general store at the petrol station if you need topping up.
Here you can either follow Tintenbar Rd up to Tamarind Drive, then back into Ballina, or turn at the petrol station into George St, which becomes old Bangalow Rd. This is quite an adventure as the road, despite recent resurfacing, is incredibly rough and can be partially submerged if the tide is in and it has rained recently. All part of the adventure! This comes out on Tamarind drive at the bottom of the hill and then an easy roll back into town then head to town for a welcome refreshment.
